FCS Spring Football
The wild world of Covid-19 has changed our entire world. It has had a very noticeable impact on how we view sports and how they are delivered to us. Amazingly we have been able to get to the end of seasons and crown champions, which is a something we were not able to do a year ago. College Football even found a way to the end of the season and gave us a playoff. The FCS (Division 1-AA) schools did not play this fall they are currently playing a spring schedule now. What this development has given us is some good football to watch during a time when we usually don’t have it to watch. Maybe after this season maybe this is something that we can keep.
Now more than a few of these teams use the funds from playing games against Power 5 schools and getting that big pay day but maybe playing in the springs would allow these schools to take advantage of TV deals they may not have had access to before. The Saturday television real estate is a crowded place in the fall and a fall a schedule might allow these teams to have a place to get more visibility. I think this might really workout for HBCU’s. Homecoming games in March and April would be an adjustment but also might be even more fun.
Some people may ask “what about the NFL draft”? This would be the time where prospects would be getting ready for the combine. Well, what we can do for the Seniors or Juniors who are opting out they can still go, and coaches and schools can workout the logistics or these players can have a combine in the fall or winter prior to the season. Not to mention why they are making decisions on the guys from the big schools and reviewing tape the scouts can pop in and see these players in live games. Teams can draft these guys while they are in season which happens in some other sports and wait for them to come to camp when their season is over.
The most successful non-NFL pro leagues were the ones that ran during the spring like the USFL. The difference is this is not an opposition league and has already ran and been viable during the fall season and could really make a bigger impact during a spring season.
