What Will College Football Be in 2020
One thing that is as American as apple pie, is college football on a Saturday afternoon. This year things are very different. Due to the worldwide pandemic of Covid-19 how we enjoy one of our favorite pastimes will look vastly different.
As this is being written the Big Ten and Pac 12 have decided to suspend their fall seasons. This may change as the pressure to play is weighing on both conferences. The other 3 Power 5 conferences will go full steam ahead with conference only schedules. The MAC and Mountain West will sit out this season while the rest of the Group of 5 schools make a go of it.
The season has begun technically but Houston Baptist vs North Texas doesn’t hit the same as Ohio State vs USC. There are some major questions at play with this season. Apparently, they will allow fans in the stadiums which is different from the NBA, NHL and MLB. Georgia Tech and UGA both stated that they will allow 20% capacity and there will be social distancing. From some of the earlier games that have already been played it does not seem that they are being as strict.
One thing about college football is the pageantry of it all and some of that will undoubtedly be lost to some degree this year. With a lot of the fans missing and some of the restrictions place because of Covid this season will be one unlike any other. As we already seen some games will not even go on as scheduled because of positive test for players causing these contests to either be moved around or cancelled altogether. Hopefully, we can complete a safe season. The fans and players seem to need it.
